Older data destruction methods like degaussing rely on magnetic fields, which do nothing to solid-state drives. Drilling or hammering a platter can leave large sections of data physically intact and, in some cases, recoverable. Industrial shredding reduces drives, HDD, SSD, or NVMe, to particles small enough that no meaningful data recovery is possible, regardless of drive architecture. It's the method referenced by the NIST 800-88 Destroy tier, the highest sanitization standard.
